We developed Swan City Basketball because we are all parents of very active children here in Grande Prairie.  We wanted to introduce our kids and others to the game of basketball.  As a result, Swan City Basketball aims to expose children and youth to the game of basketball in a safe, positive, fun and inclusive environment!  It is our goal, our kids and yours grow to the love the game of basketball the same way that we do!

We   Build   Experiences

The purpose of Swan City Basketball is to develop fundamental skills, promote sportsmanship and provide more opportunities to athletes in Grande Prairie and the surrounding areas to get involved in Basketball.  We will run Skill Sessions for children going into Kindergarten, all the way up to children going into Grade 9.   We will also offer summer sessions.

SWAN CITY BASKETBALL follows the Athlete Development Model presented by CANADA BASKETBALL
"The Canada Basketball Athlete Development Model recognizes that there are two sub-phases of the 5 Overview FUNdamentals stage. The first is called the Movement phase. This is generally children ages 6 to 7 years old. Here basketball is learned through the fundamental movement skills. The second phase is the Modified Games phase which encompasses children 8 and 9 years old. Basketball is learned here through modified games such as 1-on-1, 2-on-2, etc."

The start of the Journey

Summer Camps

Our skills camps aim to introduce children and youth to the game of basketball and slowly increase their capacity.  The skills camps will revolve around developing fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting.  Sessions will be designed to build on previously acquired knowledge and use them in game-like situations.

"Canadian Sport for Life, published by the Canadian Sport Centres, states that physical activity should be fun and a required part of the child’s daily life, not something required. Active play is the way young children are physically active."
Our summer camps will offer players an opportunity to develop their skills in a week long format that emphasizes skill development and the introduction of fundamental sport skills which are the cornerstones of all athletic development.

The week long basketball camp will also introduce goal setting, concentration and motivation.  The focus of this camp will be to develop a task-oriented form of motivation as opposed to an outcome-oriented style.
